The Aberdares, the third highest of mountain ranges in Kenya, are known for their spectacular lush forests, teeming with an amazing variety of wildlife. Its thick vegetation supports countless species of wildlife including elephants, buffalos, the endangered black rhinos, giant forest hogs, and the rare colobus Monkey among many others.
During nights, the cries of hyrax and the growl of leopard break the seeming noiselessness of the jungles and the whole forest becomes alive with sounds of animals and birds. The Aberdares also has a series of spectacular waterfalls, including the famous Thompson's Falls.
The Aberdares are easily accessible by vehicle or on foot. There are many fine trekking routes throughout the forests, and across the moorlands, offering an unforgettable forest trekking to visitors. There are a number of waterholes and natural salt licks, which are frequented by large elephant herds, rhinos, giant forest hogs, or the elusive Bongo antelopes during the night. The Aberdares forests also have a number of Treetops and The Ark lodges, which provide unforgettable nighttime wildlife viewing. The rolling moorlands, which start above 10,000 ft, are home to elands, lions, elephants and buffalos along with many exotic birds, such as the crowned eagle, Jackson's francolin, sparrow hawk, African goshawk, sunbirds and plovers. The region offers excellent conditions for bird watching, high altitude hiking, providing breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley and Mt Kenya.
