Lake Baringo

Located in the Northern Kenya at about 290 km North of Nairobi, Lake Baringo is one of only two freshwater lakes in the Great Rift Valley. Surrounded by vast arid plains, the beautiful freshwater lake appears as an oasis in the desert. Baringo is world-famous for its rich and diverse avian population with over 470 species of birds.

The shallow lake has an average depth of just 8 meters, and has three islands: Ol Kokwa, Teddy Bear, and Gibraltar, which are breeding grounds for Goliath heron, the largest of the heron species. Its marshy shores also provide excellent conditions for survival and growth of the resident hippos.

Covering an area of approximately 170 sq. km, the beautiful Lake Baringo is surrounded by spectacular volcanic ranges. The lake has a rich population of fish, which in turn attract a wide variety of bird species. The most popular and commonly seen birds seen here include Pelicans, Cormorants, Gabar Goshawk, Paradise Flycatcher, Marabou Storks, Owls, Hornbills (along the cliffs), African Darters, and Fish Eagles. It attracts thousands of bird lovers and ornithologists from all over the world. The Lake also has a sizable population of hippos and crocodiles. Other must see attraction include the Rock Hyrax (a small rodent-like mammal), which can be seen around basalt cliffs. Besides, there are two beautiful hot springs on a nearby island. Visitors can also enjoy a range of exciting activities like a bird safari, boat cruising, fishing, horse riding, camel riding or visiting an Njemps village and Bogoria hot springs.
