Deserts in Kenya

Kenya is a land of great geographical and topographical diversities. The country has some of the most spectacular mountain ranges, valleys, beaches and deserts in the world. Kenya has a vast expanse of desert and semi desert landscapes.

Mainly located in the northern part of the country, these harsh and sparsely populated deserts are known for their stunning natural beauty. Although not so extensive as other deserts in Africa, the deserts in Kenya are known for their towering sand dunes and traditional caravan routes. The deserts are also home to Kenya's last nomadic tribes, such as the Turkana, Samburu, Marakwet, Pokot, El Molo, and the Gabbra tribes.

The deserts of Kenya offer the real adventure to intrepid visitors who feels like answering the call of the wild and setting off on an expedition into the unknown. The most famous desert and semi-desert regions in Kenya include the inhospitable Chalbi Desert (referred as the Kenya's only true desert), z, and the regions around Marsabit, Maralal, and Lake Turkana.

Surrounded by volcanoes and ancient lava flows, Chalbi Desert is the hottest and most arid region in Kenya. Chalbi Desert, with its vast dunes and volcanic mountains are home to traditional tribes, the Rendille and Gabra, desert nomads who maintain a camel culture.

Situated north of Marsabit, is the inhospitable Dida Galgalla Desert, which shelters numerous rare species of birds including the black-faced Heughins' bustard, the Somali ostrich, the swallow-tailed kite and the very rare hammergeyer (bearded vulture). Beyond Marsabit is a region of desert and semi-desert that is sparsely populated and harsh. Nyiri Desert lies about 80 km east of Lake Magadi, near the northern border of Tanzania. The desert encompasses the world-famous Amboseli National Park. It's also home to elephants, giraffes, Grevy's zebras, rhinoceros, lions, leopards, lesser kudus, and impalas.
