Lake Magadi

The southern most lake in the Great Rift Valley, Magadi is situted in a depression some 1,000 meters below Nairobi. Lake Magadi is a spectacular soda lake, covering an area of approximately 104 sq km. Its alkaline water, which is a dense sodium carbonate brine, precipitates enormous quanitites of crystal trona deposits, making it the world's second largest source of sodium carbonate. Lying in one of the driest and hottest regions of Kneya, Magadi is known for its stunning landscapes, for the wonderful colors of its soda water, and pink flocks of flamingoes. The lake changes its color from brilliant white to cerise pink, cobalt, indigo, deep scarlet and soft pastels, according to changes in the light.

Lake Magadi is a favorite nesting ground for thousands of greater and lesser flamingoes, because they can nest here free from potential predators. The pinkish birds visit the lake in a flock of thousands, and excavate 20-40 cm high mud cones to lay their eggs. As the lake is surrounded by extensive salt flats, it's difficult for other animals to survive. Lake Magadi is also home to one of Africa's toughest fish, tilapia Grahami, which live in the hot springs on the fringes of the lake. Its freshwater springs also attract a host of other bird. With so much to offer, Lake Magadi is not to be missed attractions on your Kenya Tour.
