Mt Kenya is the tallest mountain in Kenya and and is worshipped by the local people as the abode of their gods. Ngai, the God of the local Kikuyu people, is believed to reside on Mt Kenya or Kirinyaga, 'Place of Light,' as its known in the local language.
Mt Kenya is the second highest peak in Africa, the tallest being Mt Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania. Its lower slopes are covered with dense forest, though the actual peak is covered with snow. The montane vegetation of Mt Kenya has many rare plants including podocarpus and groundsel. The trek lasts 3-5 days depending on whether you want to ascend the summit of Mt Kenya at 5199 m or the lower Point Lenana at 4985 m.
The view of equatorial snow on the upper reaches of Mt Kenya is a fascinating sight. The high peaks of Mt Kenya rise skywards, and the sunlight is reflected off the white snow. The snowmelt feeds numerous clear mountain streams that flow down the mountain. While trekking through Mt Kenya forests you will cross many of these streams and can feel the chilled water of the snows of Mt Kenya.
