Lake Turkana

Located in the Great Rift Valley in the northern Kenya, Lake Turkana is one of the largest lakes in the world. Situated at an altitude of 375 m (1,230 feet) above sea level, the massive lake covers an area of over 6,400 sq km, making it the largest desert lake in the world. Also known as Lake Rudolf, Turkana is 248 km long and 16-32 km wide lake, surrounded by a spectacular landscape of dry desert and hills. Turkana also has three volcanic islands inside it. Commonly referred to as the jade sea, due to its electric blue-green color, Turkana offers an extraordinary sight as the shimmering colors of its surface contrast sharply with the barren, lunar landscape of extinct volcanoes and lava beds that surround it. Truly, it's one of the natural wonders of the world, and a must visit attraction on your Kenya Tour.

Lake Turkana is very rich in its fish population with over 40 species of fish, which in turn attracts large numbers of water birds including flamingos, cormorants and kingfishers. In order to protect their breeding grounds, two of its islands- Southern Island and Central Island, have been declared national parks. But, the lake is primarily known for its crocodiles and hippos. It is home to about 22,000 crocodiles, the single largest crocodile population in the world. Other wildlife attractions of Turkana include Grevy's Zebra, reticulated Giraffes, and Camels.

Lake Turkana is also considered "the Cradle of Humanity," as the recent humanoid fossil evidence unearthed at Koobi Fora on Lake Turkana are believed to be over 3 millions years old. Now a protected site, it lies at the heart of the Sibiloi National Park, a place of stark beauty and prehistoric petrified forests. Other attraction of Lake Turkana is its tribal settlement at Loyangalani. Kenya's smallest tribe, El Molo, reside in nearby villages in their distinctive rounded reed huts. With its spectacular scenery, unique wildlife, and simply fascinating archaeological treasures, Turkana is a perfect destination to be in.
