Conceived for preserving the breeding ground for East Lamu
Topi, pelicans with other local bird life, the Dodori National
Reserve was opened in 1976 with a total covered area of 877
sq km. The reserve gets its name from the river ending in
the Indian Ocean at Dodori Creek.
Location
Located at the northernmost corner of the Kenyan shoreline,
there is a nearby airstrip through which the Dodori National
Reserve can be accessed.
Climate
It is generally hot and humid.
Wild Life Attractions
Dodori National Reserve is famous for its Topi population.
One can also catch glimpses of elephants, gazelles, lesser
kudus, zebras and lions. The Dodori River flowing through
the park is frequented by gazelles, antelopes and water birds.
The river channels are breeding grounds for the green turtles
and the dugongs.
The rich bird life varies from Palmut vulture, Southern branded
harrier eagle, honey buzzard, brown hooded kingfisher, European
and carmine bee-eaters, brown breasted barbet and to the violet
breasted sunbird.
Things to do
Game viewing and bird watching are the usual activities.
