The Kagamega Forest National Reserve is the only tropical
rainforest in Kenya, the sole remnant of the Guineo-Congolian
forest eco system. It has an amazing diversity in both flora
and fauna. The forest comprises of both hard and soft woods,
namely Elgon teak, red and white stink woods and varieties
of Croton.
Location
Located in western Kenya, it is situated 15 km away from the
Kagamega town from which the reserve derives its name. It
can be accessed through the Buyangu gate, 600m off the Kagamega-Eldoret
highway
Climate
The climate is mostly wet but since it is a tropical rainforest,
it can change at a moment's notice.
Wild Life Attractions
The Kagamega Forest National Reserve is a habitat for over
300 bird species, 27 species of snakes and 4000 different
types of butterflies. The rich fauna also consists of Turner's
eromomela, Charpin's flycatcher and the voice mimicking gray
African parrot, the endangered DeBrazza monkey, the Colobus
Monkey and the Flying Squirrel.
Things to do
Tourists can go on nature trails measuring up to 7kms along
with a team of ranger guides.
The walk to Buyango Hill, the highest point in the forest,
is a must do. The Kagamega Forest National Reserve also provides
an excellent opportunity for primates viewing as well as bird
watching.
Accommodation
The reserve has 6 simple chalets built in a traditional manner.
It also has a guest house, bandas and two campsites. Hotel
accommodations are also available in the Kagamega town in
the form of Golf Hotel, Golden Inn, Isecheno Guest House and
Rondo Retreat.
