Famous for its intact marine environment and an increasing
number of fish species and corals, the Kisite-Mpunguti National
Reserve is entirely in shallow water. The reefs in this reserve
act as important habitats and form complex eco-systems.
Location
Located at the southern most tip of the Kenyan coastline,
near Shimoni and south of Wasani Island near the Tanzanian
border, the Kisite-Mpunguti National Reserve can be accessed
via the sea or road. The traditional dhow is used to ferry
tourists to-and-fro from the coastal mainland to the reserve.
Climate
The climate is generally hot and humid, hence loose cotton
clothes and appropriate swimwear is recommended.
Wild Life Attractions
A haven of amazing aquatic fishes, the Kisite-Mpunguti National
Reserve is home to dolphins, big shoals of bonito and frigate
mackerels. There are also turtles, angels Manta rays and lots
of pelagic fishes. Coral varieties include stag horn, brain,
mushroom and pencil species. Butterflies and parrots can be
seen too.
