Spanning both sides of equator, criss-crossed by 13 rivers, framed by the slopes of Nyambeni Mountain Range and having a diverse topography, the Meru National Park is famous as the setting for the book and the subsequent movie- Born Free.
Location
Situated east-north-east of Mt. Kenya in the Meru district, this national park can be accessed through two main routes by way of Nairobi. The first is the main road via Nyeri, Nanyuki and Meru, the second is via Embu-Meru road. There are 3 airstrips too.
Climate
The region receives about rainfall of 635-762 in the west and about 305-356 in the east
Wild Life Attractions
The Meru National Park is abound with leopard black rhinos, oryxs, lions, elephants, cheetahs, zebras and gazelles apart from the vast herd of buffaloes. One can see hippos and crocodiles in the Tana River. Pel's Fishing Owl, Peter's Finfoot, Red-necked falcon and brown-backed woodpecker are some of the rare bird species seen in the park.
Things to do
Tourists flock to the Adamsons Falls and to the monument of Elsa, the lioness. Other choices include game viewing, fishing, bird watching, hiking, boating and rafting. One enjoy the splendid view of Mt Kenya

The Meru National Park offers excellent accommodation by the way of lodges, namely the New leopard rock lodge and the Meru Mulika lodge. Tourists can also make use of the Kindani and the Bwatheroni campsites. There are also Murera bandas within the park.
