Mt. Elgon, the second highest mountain in Kenya, is of a volcanic origin and was created when the earth's crust erupted, creating the Great Rift Valley. The Mount Elgon National Park is one of the remaining wild and intact national parks of Kenya with vast stretches of still unexplored forests.
Location
Set on the Kenya-Uganda border in the Trans-nzonia district of the Rift Valley, the park can be accessed through the tarmac road of Kitale or through the Endebess route. There is an airstrip at the Park headquarters also.
Climate
The climate hovers between moist to moderate dry.
Wild Life Attractions
The Mount Elgon National Park is home to 400 elephants, buffaloes, leopards, the protected colobus and blue monkeys, giant forest hogs, waterbucks and various other types of antelope. Over 240 species of birds have been recorded.
Things to do
Besides game viewing and bird watching, the tourists have a whole of other activities to choose from like exploring the vast caves. The park has three short nature trails to the Kiptum cave, Makingem cave and the Elephant Buff. Adventure seekers can climb Koitoboss, the highest peak of Mt. Elgon. There are facilities for picnicking and camping out in the wild also.

There is the Kapkuro Banda, the Mt. Elgon Lodge and 3 public campsites, namely- Rongai, Nyati and Cholrim as well as the special Salt Lick campsite by the way of accommodations.
